The Spirituality of Music

The Spirituality of Music
Opinion by Ramy Adly

One day, I was talking to my friend about music. We both have been musicians for a long time, and he told me that he feels completely weightless when he plays his instrument. I asked him what he meant by that and he explained that he can get so focused and lost in the music until he feels like there is nothing else in the world but him and his instrument. This is a common experience among passionate musicians because music is much more than just sound. Music is movement, emotion, and life. Music is a reflection of the human soul and the connection between musicians and music is unbreakable.

When I think about music, it is a form of worship and respect for every note. A long time ago, I discovered that music is much more than sound, for every single note can hold so much power. Music is art and art imitates life, so every mood, emotion, and situation can be represented by changes in the tone, rhythm, scales, and notes of an instrument. I can express myself and get in touch with my spirituality when I play my Oud instrument. This is the same feeling that all my colleagues and students experience because we are all very passionate and focused on the music we play.

Music will always be the sound of spirituality and a way for humans to connect with one another.
In ancient days, humans relied on notes and melodies for spiritual and religious worship because they recognized the true power of music. Dating back to 3000 BC, societies would strictly keep music for religious ceremonies and for the elite. Temples and castles played music while the common people lived without music for a long time. Eventually music would be adopted by common people and spread around the world into different genres and styles. All musicians and listeners build a connection with music.

Example of spiritual music in Asia

The spirituality of music evolved into different forms when each religion made its own music. For example there is the Islam Sufi music, or in christrianity there is an orthodox form of music called Quddase. It’s peaceful to hear music of these religions as you also hear a great example of music when you listen to the world famous Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

In definition, the word Music is divided into two parts. The first part is ‘Mus’ and the second part is ‘ic’. ‘Mus’ translates in Hebrew to something that has been taken out of something. ‘Ic’ means spirit in ancient Egypitan. Music, by definition, is spiritual.

Composers especially feel this level of spirituality when they compose music. Talented composers find something to inspire them to create a new piece of art. There is a spiritual relationship between creating music and a composer because a composer has to create emotional connections with the music. There are two types of compositions. One is a planned composition that comes from the mind and the other composition comes from the heart and soul.

Colors and music

There is a relationship between colors and music. The relationship dates back to ancient times as Egyptologists discovered hieroglyphics in some of the temples in ancient Egypt, stating that music and color are related. In ancient Egyptian music, the color red refers to note C , yellow refers to note E, and that will produce D in the middle for an Orange color.
There are many shades of colors that represent different frequencies of sound.

But what does that have to do with spirituality?

Life without color is like life without music. The world would be boring without color and music, so there is a relationship between human emotion, color, and music. Color inspires visual artists and musicians because color often represents mood. For example, a dark night can be associated with blue, black, and violet colors with a low bass sound from an instrument like a cello or bass guitar. A morning scene may be associated with bright colors like yellow or orange, and there is usually upbeat, higher pitch music in the scene. A romantic scene may use colors of red and pink with smooth saxophone sounds.

A composer creating a piece for a film needs to see the scene to be able to pair the music with the colors and mood. Music and color complement each other and they make life beautiful. Everyone has had some spiritual experience or connection with music and color.

The Notes

Each note can hold so much power, yet the true beauty of music is how notes come together to form a song. Musicians appreciate and feel every note to create a melody. Let’s remember that Mozart only used 4 notes to compose his famous ninth sonata. Each note means so much and completely changes the mood of the song.

The power of music
In short, music is very powerful. A musician can express their emotions and learn more about themselves when they play their instruments. Listeners dance and sing along with their friends at a concert. Everybody loves music and it brings people together. Every note, melody, and song is different and the power of music is unlimited.
